If you missed the great surprise of the 82nd Academy Awards, -for pfans and non pfans- the glorious return of Michelle Pfeiffer to the Oscar stage, stunning in a red Carolina Herrera, to tribute and present the nomination of Jeff Bridges, you can watch it now!

Michelle Pfeiffer, Julianne Moore, Vera Farmiga, Colin Farrell and Tim Robbins take the stage to present the Best Actor category. Pfeiffer introduced Bridges, who eventually went on to win the Oscar for Best Actor, calling him one of the least vain actors around. The actress, remembering working with him on “The Fabulous Baker Boys” said:

“The make-up artist hand-paints onto his face every line and broken capillary she had just removed from mine. It is that kind of attention to detail and lack of vanity that has made Jeff not just a great actor, but a brilliant one.”

After Pfeiffer, Julianne Moore honored a Single Man’s Colin Firth; Vera Farmiga talked about working with Up in the Air’s George Clooney; Tim Robbins about Morgan Freeman claimed his fellow Shawshank Redemption inmate once messed up his name; and Colin Farrell admits that he once spooned Jeremy Renner while filming S.W.A.T..

Michelle Pfeiffer salutes to amazing nominee Jeff Bridges with a sincere and a beautiful speech and honoring her Susie Diamond in The Fabulous Baker Boys dressed in red.

Michelle recounted how they shared a makeup artist who erased her complexion flaws and seemed to transfer them to Bridges. “It is that kind of attention to detail and lack of vanity that has made Jeff not just a great actor, but a brilliant one,” Pfeiffer said.

Michelle has come back to the ceremony after 16 years. The actress hadn’t attended the academy Awards since March, 1994, when she was nominated to the Best Actress for Love Field.

Finally Jeff Bridges has won the Oscar to the Best Actor for Crazy Heart!!!

Ed Orkin (Jeff Goldblum) is an ordinary guy with insomnia, has a very boring job and finds out his wife is having an affair. Can his jaded life get any better? Well one night, it does take a sharp turn when he rescues a lovely, but mysterious blonde named Diana (Michelle Pfeiffer) from some ruthlessly zany thugs at the airport. From this point onwards Ed and Diana are caught up in a cheerfully dashing and murderous chase throughout the night in Los Angeles. Where everyone seems to want a piece of those six emeralds, which Diana has smuggled into the country.

The film is cool and hip and stuffed with in jokes and visual references for film buffs. It didn’t do great business but has become a cult film on the video circuit. For Pfeiffer it was a landmark.

As a classic in Michelle Pfeiffer’s fashion-style on movies is the red Napa calf jacket she wears throughout most of the film is the third leather jacket created for the screen by designer Deborah Nadoolman. She designed Indiana Jones’s aviator’s jacket for Raiders of the Lost Ark and Michael Jackson’s red and black jacket for his video Michael Jackson’s Thriller and then something a little cuter but cool for dashing Diana.

For the soundtrack. I guess you wil remind the funny music videos made for the movie, ‘In the Midnight Hour’ and ‘Lucille’, performed and played by blues guitarist B.B. King and “his Band”: Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin during their performance in one of the 80’s night’s clubs.

“Trim, smart and drop-dead gorgeous, Pfeiffer has been nibbling at stardom since her stints in Grease 2 and Scarface. Now, by animating this sparkling thriller satire with her seen it all elegance, she has every right to feast on it…”

It is just a piece wrote by  Richard Corliss of Time magazine about Michelle when Into the Night went into cinemas in February, 1985. Phrase “Drop-dead gorgeous” (means “breathtakingly beautiful”) seems to have been with us since just 1985. The phrase struck a chord and there are many references to it in newspapers and journals from very soon after that.

But the movie didn’t actually get a very good reception by dritics: Vincent Canby in the New York Times wrote: “A little bit of Into The Night is funny, a lot of it is grotesque and all of it has the insidey manner of a movie made not for the rest of us but for moviemakers on the Bel Air circuit who watch each other’s films in their own screening rooms.” He reserved praise, however, for the performances of the two leading actors: “Mr. Goldblum does little except react to the outrages of others, which he manages with a good deal of comic poise. Miss Pfeiffer, last seen as Al Pacino’s cocaine-zonked wife in Scarface, is so beautiful that one is apt not to notice that she has the potential for being a fine comedienne.”

Variety held a similar view, writing that the “film itself tries sometimes too hard for laughs and at other times strains for shock,” while also praising the performance of Jeff Goldblum, “nonetheless enjoyable as he constantly tries to figure out just what he’s doing in all of this.”

Some critics saw the large number of cameo appearances by Landis’s friends and colleagues as unnecessary and distracting. Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times wrote: “If I had been the agent for one of the stars, like Goldblum, Michelle Pfeiffer, Richard Farnsworth or Kathryn Harrold, I think I would have protested to the front office that Landis was engaging in cinematic auto-eroticism and that my clients were getting lost in the middle of the family reunion.”

Time Out wrote: “The casting of innumerable major film-makers in small roles seems an unnecessary bit of elbow-jogging, but David Bowie makes an excellent contribution as an English hit man, and the two leading players are excellent: Pfeiffer in particular takes the sort of glamorous yet preposterous part that generally defeats even the best actress and somehow contrives to make it credible every inch of the way.”

Falling In Love Again (1979)

Tagline: “Remember how you loved each other?”
Genre: Romantic Drama

Also known as In Love, Falling in Love Again marks the big-screen debut of Michelle Pfeiffer. While en route to a class reunion, Harry Lewis (Elliott Gould) recalls the golden days of his youth. These flashbacks are contrasted with his current sorry existence as the unhappy husband of his high-school sweetheart, Sue (Susannah York). This was the directorial debut for 20-year-old Steven Paul (whose brother Stuart plays the younger Gould), and on Pfeiffer, someone had to find resemblance to a young Susannah York, since the actress plays the teenage Yorks’ part in the flashbacks. The movie, considerated as a drama, has little bites of romantic comedy in the flashbacks.

It’s only a slight moment of prophecy, but the first time Pfeiffer appears on screen she has a halo around her head. The best reason to get this is to fall in love again with the girl who would be Catwoman.

Grease 2 (1982)

Tagline: “Grease is still the word!”
Genre: Comedy Musical

The film reverse the social characteristics of the first film’s romantic leads (played by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John). In the sequel, the boy (Maxwell Caulfield) is the bookish milquetoast, while the girl (Michelle Pfeiffer) is the hip greaser groupie, a Pink Lady.

Return to rockin’ Rydell High for a whole new term! It’s 1961, two years after the original Grease gang graduated, and there’s a new crop of seniors – and new members of the coolest cliques on campus, the Pink Ladies and T-Birds. Michael Carrington (Caulfield) is the new kid in school – but he’s been branded a brainiac. Can he fix up an old motorcycle, don a leather jacket, avoid a rumble with the leader of the T-Birds, and win the heart of Pink Lady Stephanie Zinone (Pfeiffer)? He’s surely going to try!

Despite its critical mauling and failure at the box office, it has developed a cult following. It camp kitsch at its finest and you’d be surprised just how many people out there love this film. Around the net there are thousands of fans in appreciation groups, and even they are a pretty mixed bunch (male – female – somewhere in between) not everyone it going to love this film, but its worth watching with an open mind!

Ladyhawke (1984)

Tagline: “A Magical Mystical Adventure”
Genre: Romantic Fantasy

This is one of the most beautiful movie ever, at least for me. It is a funny, full of action, fantastic and romantic film directed by Richard Donner, starring Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer. In medieval Europe a thief called “The Mouse” (Broderick) escapes the dungeons of Aquila, setting in motion a chain of events that may save or destroy a beautiful woman (Pfeiffer) and a brave captain (Hauer). The two lovers are doomed to lifelong separation by a demonic curse invoked by the corrupt and jealous Bishop of Aquilla (John Wood): by day Isabeau is transformed into a hawk, while at night Navarre becomes a black wolf. Imperius (Leo McKern), the monk who drunkenly betrayed their love to the Bishop, has found a way to break the curse, but only if he and the Mouse can get them back into Aquilla to face the Bishop.

I never forgot the feeling it left me with: This is heart-wrenching romance. And besides it was the movie in which I discovered Michelle Pfeiffer when I was 8 in 1985… and of course my favorite one… (I know) I’ve said it over and over again!

Definitely a unique type of love story and a must to see for new generation.

The Russia House (1990)

Tagline: “A Spy Story . . . A Love Story . . . A Story to Cross all Boundaries.”
Genre: Romantic Drama

It’s  an amazing movie. It captures the majesty of Russia in visits to Moscow and St. Petersburg (Leningrad) as well as the crumbling Soviet state. The first western movie filmed in the Soviet Union, The Russia House is better defined as a love story than as a spy thriller.

Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer ignite the screen in this enchanting adaptation of John Le Carre’s romantic suspenseful espionage drama. Connery portrays Barley Blair — a lonely, middle aged, hard-drinking, London publisher — who has a love for all things Russian. While in Russia, Barley captures the attention of a daring Russian scientist (Klaus Maria Brandauer), who attempts to send him a top secret manuscript disclosing the secrets of Russian military defense, which, if published in the West could alter the global balance of power. However, the manuscript falls into the hands of the British C.I.A., and they coerce Blair into traveling to the Soviet Union to find out the identity of the manuscript’s author and the validity behind the secret military codes. Reluctantly, Blair arrives in the cold landscape, hoping to complete his mission and leave as soon as possible. But his contact turns out to be Katya (Pfeiffer), a sensitive and beautiful Russian editor, and Blair soon falls deeply in love with her. Realizing she is an unwitting pawn in a deadly game, he does everything he can to protect her, and his empty life is once again filled with meaning. Set against the vivid backdrop of Russia’s most beautiful cities, this thriller explores the tension filled years during and after Glasnost as Russia struggled to gain power and shed their previous political reputation.

The Russia House is a truly mysterious and romantic movie.

Frankie & Johnny (1991)

Tagline: “You never choose love. Love chooses you.”
Genre: Romantic Comedy-Drama

Michelle Pfeiffer plays Frankie, a Manhattan coffee-shop waitress whose hair hangs down in greasy, indifferent tangles. Al Pacino is Johnny, the boisterous new cook who peeks beneath her depression and sees that she’s the one for him.

We can say that Frankie & Johnny falls squarely in the tradition of inspirational Hollywood romance — the sort of film in which Boy meets Girl, Boy makes a shameless, life-loving spectacle of himself in order to impress Girl, Girl gets jealous when Boy has a fling with someone else, and so forth. Most of the movie isn’t terribly surprising. But yet Frankie & Johnny gives Pfeiffer and Pacino room to create warm, expansive characters, and it has one element that feels absolutely fresh: It captures the dull romantic ache people can carry around with them for years. The movie is mature enough to understand that love, contrary to our starry-eyed fantasies, often demands a spark of will — that at some point you have to leave your cloister behind and say that, yes, this is the person I’m going to take a chance on.

Frankie & Johnny does what any true romantic movie should: It makes the mysterious, push-and-pull alchemy of love seem, once again, worth the effort.

The Age of Innocence (1993)

Tagline: “In a world of tradition. In an age of innocence. They dared to break the rules.”
Genre: Romantic Drama

Directed by Martin Scorsese based on Edith Wharton’s classic 1920 novel about a thwarted love affair, the movie is set among the upper echelons of New York society in the 1870s-an American aristocracy, patterned after the European one of old but marked by a Puritan fervor that is strictly homegrown. The characters in The Age of Innocence almost never say what they’re thinking. Instead, they allude to it-playfully, elliptically, maliciously, in language contrived not to seem the least bit ”unpleasant.”

Society scion Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) is engaged to May Welland (Winona Ryder), but his well-ordered life is upset when he meets May’s unconventional cousin, the Countess Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer). At first, Newland becomes a defender of the Countess, whose separation from her abusive husband makes her a social outcast in the restrictive high society of late-19th Century New York, but he finds in her a companion spirit and they fall in love.

The story told here is brutal and bloody, the story of a man’s passion crushed, his heart defeated. Yet it is also much more, and the last scene of the film, which pulls everything together, is almost unbearably poignant…

Up Close & Personal (1995)

Tagline: “Every Day we Have, is One More Than We Deserve.”
Genre: Romantic Drama

”I’m giving you a shot as a reporter. You thought I came by to f— you,” craggily handsome veteran TV newsguy Warren Justice (Robert Redford) challenges dewily pretty neophyte TV newsgal Tally Atwater (Michelle Pfeiffer) early in their relationship in Up Close & Personal. It’s a variation on A Star Is Born. The movie is based loosely on Jessica Savitch story, the newswoman who, in the 1970’s, became the “First Woman Anchor”. Sally/Tally is taken under the wing of Warren in a Miami newsroom and becomes a TV news star. Despite her love for Warren, she takes the big chance and moves on to Philadelphia, where he follows to rescue her faltering career at the cost of his own.

The movie works well viewed as a love story. And it includes the hit song “Because You Loved Me” performed by Celine Dion which received a nomination for the Academy Awards.

One Fine Day (1996)

Tagline: “She was having a perfectly bad day… Then he came along and spoiled it.”
Genre: Romantic Comedy

Michelle Pfeiffer plays Melanie, a single mom and architect with a moppety 5-year-old son and one ear permanently glued to her damn cellular phone; George Clooney is Jack, a secondary-custody divorced dad and newspaper columnist with a precocious 5-year-old daughter and his own damn cell phone. The two adults meet cute (forced to share a cab to get their kids to a school event, they inadvertently swap damn cell phones); by the end of the day, they’re goo-goo over each other.

One Fine Day is a film with a very smart script, funny dialogues, beautiful acting, directing, and it all gels well together. Chemistry between the former Catwoman and the third Batman was undeniable, the two stars are both perfectly charming throughout.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1999)

Tagline: “Love makes fools of us all.”
Genre: Romantic Fantastic Comedy

It is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play of the same name. The movie is an enchanted folly suggesting that romance is a matter of chance, since love is blind; at the right moment we are likely to fall in love with the first person our eyes light upon. Much of the play’s fun comes during a long night in the forest, where the mischiefmaker anoints the eyes of sleeping lovers with magic potions that cause them to adore the first person they see upon awakening. This causes all sorts of confusions, not least when Titania (Michelle Pfeiffer), the Fairy Queen herself, falls in love with a weaver who has grown donkey’s ears. The weaver is Bottom (Kevin Kline), and he and the mischievous Puck (Stanley Tucci) are the most important characters in the play, although it also involves dukes, kings, queens and high-born lovers. Bottom has a good heart and bumbles through, and Puck spreads misunderstanding wherever he goes. The young lovers are pawns in a magic show: When they can’t see the one they love, they love the one they see.

Though some critics dumped on this film, it is a playful, sexy piece of work with lots of charm. The movie literally sparkles. The settings are full of rich colors and magical lighting. And the cast is an utter delight.

The Story of Us (1999)

Tagline: “Can a marriage survive 15 years of marriage?.”
Genre: Romantic Comedy-Drama

Psychologists always say that it’s healthy for a couple to fight, but somehow it doesn’t feel that way when you’re fighting. The Story of Us, Rob Reiner’s pungent, funny, and surprisingly forceful movie, follows an embattled Los Angeles couple, Ben and Katie Jordan (Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer), who have been together for 15 years but have stopped recognizing the goodness they share. When they go at each other — as they do for most of the film — the conflicts have a testy directness that’s snappish enough to wound.

The movie creates something unexpected: a marital romance. It shows the squabbles, the war-weary cocooning, and the potential destruction of this relationship on its own fractious, moment-to-moment terms. The Story of Us evokes a paradox of marriage — namely, that Ben and Katie are drawn to each other for the very complementary qualities that also make them rivals. The movie catches the alternating currents of affection and pride, resentment and passion that bind people together even as they’re being torn apart.

The best: Michelle Pfeiffer’s final speech is a smiling-through-tears rouser.

I Could Never Be Your Woman (2006)

Tagline: “Find Yourself. In Love.”
Genre: Romantic Comedy

Slapstick, cerebral, puns, visual humor, industry in jokes, innuendo, and satire… are at full force. Amy Heckerling’s comedy, I Could Never Be Your Woman, is a film of real sweetness – but even the sentimentality is handled well – but not saccharine. It handles the idea of older woman – younger man with a delicious sense of balance and farce.

The movie makes a convincing case that every love feels like the first. It follows a divorced woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) in her forty’s who meets a guy (Paul Rudd) in his late twenties through work (she’s a producer on a fictitious teen sitcom) while her teenage daughter (Saroirse Ronan) falls in love for the first time. This movie works for a lot of different reasons. The first being the undeniable chemistry between Pfeiffer and Rudd who plays the kind of guy that any girl at any age could fall for. Even more than his charm is his relentless persistence of Pfeiffer’s character, not caring about the age difference at all and trying to convince her she should either.

Definitely this is one of the most underrated romantic comedies ever.

Cheri (2009)

Tagline: “In a game of seduction, never fall in love.”
Genre: Romantic Drama

Although it hasn’t a happy end, I’ve wanted to pick Chéri into the Vanlentine’s Day movies because it shows to us how love and passion can be lived in any age.

At 50, Michelle Pfeiffer has never looked more ravishing then she does as Léa, the fancy-free Paris courtesan of Colette’s 1920 novel and its sequel. The actress is twinkly and creamy-skinned; she makes Léa a glowing, knowing, temperamentally ageless coquette. But the real freshness of her performance is that, in a movie that has Léa involve herself with a much younger man — the louche, gullible Chéri (Rupert Friend), who’s the wealthy son of one of her courtesan colleagues (Kathy Bates) — Pfeiffer transcends any hint of cliché ”cougar” voraciousness.

Chéri marks a reunion between Stephen Frears, Michelle Pfeiffer and the screenwriter Christopher Hampton 21 years after all three collaborated on Dangerous Liaisons.

The movie brings to us how wily and deceptive love can be.

All of them are my choices for a right Valentine’s Day… they are romantic movies with LOVE as main theme. But let’s remember Michelle has fallen in love in many other movies:

So, in Scarface (1983), the actress gets married to the drug-dealer-mobster Al Pacino; in Into the Night (1983) ends in love with Jeff Goldblum; shares the love of Jack Nicholson with Cher and Susan Sarandon in The Witches of Wastwick (1987) and getting him only for herself in Wolf (1994); falls on the cop Matthew Modine’s arms in Married To The Mob (1988); repeats with a cop, Kurt Russell and a drug dealer, Mel Gibson –who finally gets to her– in Tequila Sunrise (1988); lives a tragic romance with John Malkovich in Dangerous Liaisons (1988); reaches boiling point with Jeff Bridges in The Fabulous Bake Boys (1989); lives and interracial romance with Dennis Haysbert in Love Field (1991); becomes a romantic interest for Bruce Wayne and a deadly adversary for Batman playe by Michael Keaton in Batman Returns (1992); is the gost of the Peter Gallagher’s dead wife in To Gilliam on Her 37th Birthday (1996); in What Lies Beneat (2000) is the dedeived spouse of Harrison Ford; and in Personal Effects (2008) comes back to fall in love with a man younger than her, Ashton Kutcher.

Into this movie pack, we can include Stardust (2007) altough she isn’t the main love interest, but Claire Danes and Charlie Cox. Anyway it is a lovely charming fantasy movie to watch on Vanteline’s Day!

Well… if you aren’t in love.., you can always to watch a Michelle Pfeiffer’s movie! ;-)

I know, Tim Burton is one of our favorite directors and besides who got one of the most stunning Michelle Pfeiffer’s performances in her career. Batman Returns‘ Pfeiffer-Catwoman is already a classic among the villains in superhero movies and of course an icon in the history of the cinema.

Now with the upcoming “Alice” generating so much positive buzz, its easy to see the attraction for Disney. It’s been proven that retelling a story from the “villain’s” point of view can work extraordinarily well, so the las month Ain’t It Cool News reported that Burton might be adapting another classic tale soon, but this time from the point of view of the villain. The site says that Burton is interested in making a live action feature based on Maleficent from Disney’s 1959 adaptation of the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. Burton’s Dark Shadows, a film which had previously been told would shoot this year is “stumbling,” according to AICN, so Maleficent could possibly be his next project, and even the studio registered the domain name www.maleficentmovie.com some time last summer.

AICN offers appealing ideas for the plot, “she was always the most interesting character in that story, but we never knew why she hated those three little fairy wenches… or what indignity she suffered at the hands of Aurora’s parents. Yeah, I’m on board… if only it ends with Maleficent with a sword in her heart in dragon form. Cuz that’ll rule. Think about how long this plot-line was carried out over. She has quite a tale to tell.” Don’t do you think it sounds interesting?

Well, nothing is officially said by the studio neither Burton yet, but blogs and forums are already raving and speculating about the “possible” project and of course about who would be the “perfect” actress to play so interesting role. They are going with someone around her 40’s, 50’s and names on the air are Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Glenn Close (who was Cruela De Vil in ‘101 Dalmatians‘), Susan Sarandon (was Queen Narissa in ‘Enchanted‘), Tilda Swinton (was White Witch in ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe‘)… and of course our Michelle Pfeiffer although she has too recent her Lamia in ‘Stardust‘. Ah! … and Johnny Deep! LOL ;-P.

Looking for stuff about this subject, I found surprisingly this review about Stardust at Suit101 and the comparison of her performance with Sleeping Beauty’s Magnificent:

“Pfeiffer portrays Lamia with a regal disdain reminiscent of the wonderfully wicked Maleficent in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty (1959). Where actresses of any age might squawk at portraying a hideous, balding old hag, she revels in the role, playing it to full effect without overdoing it. She’s only haggish in a few scenes, though; she’s her usual drop-dead gorgeous self throughout most of the film.”

Well, I don’t know if Michelle Pfeiffer would like to play a Witch again, in spite of every one of them were great performances. Let’s remember it would be the fourth one after The Witches of Eastwick (1987) and Stardust (2007), and counting Sinbad, The Leyend Of The Seven Seas (2003) where Michelle just put her voice to Eris, the Goddess of Chaos, and anyway she was a witch.

It wouldn’t be her first villain either in her career, besides the latest two movies, Michelle already worked with director Tim Burton in Batman Returns (1992) playing one of her most successful and famous performances, Catwoman, and considerating as a villain as well, her Ingrid Magnussen in White Oleander (2002)

Without a project on the board for Michelle coming soon, I guess that any new buzz about a possible project for the actress does that our heart beats quicker. Anyway, as I’ve said above it is simply a rumor… so…
