Since this November 3, 2009, you can already buy The Michelle Pfeiffer Star Collection, the Box Set includes four Michelle’s movies and has been launched by MGM Studio. You can find into the pack four disks:

This box-set is available in the Region 1 (USA and Canada) and the movies are dubbed in English & French. It costs $17.99 in Amazon.com. Other box-sets have been done with other stars such as Clint Eastwood,  Frank Sinatra,  Gary Cooper, Jack Lemmon, Jodie Foster, Mickey Rourke, Nicolas Cage, Robert Downey, Jr., Reese Witherspoon, Sean Connery, Susan Sarandon and Winona Ryder.

As we all know, Chéri is being launched on DVD this week -20th of October-, and tons of sites are reviewing the movie again. On the ocassion of this release, it has been launched this new clip of the movie: “Pearls” with Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Friend:

Filled with luxurious gowns and lush grounds, Stephen Frears’s Colette adaptation depicts an affair too perfect to last. Parisian courtesan Lea de Lonval (Michelle Pfeiffer) retains her good looks and has invested her earnings wisely, so her colleague, Madame Peloux (Kathy Bates), persuades Lea to celebrate the inception of her retirement by teaching the Madame’s self-centered son, Chéri (Rupert Friend, recalling T.Rex’s tousle-haired Marc Bolan), how to treat a lady. Lea, who has known Chéri his entire life, has genuine affection for the unformed lad, although, as she quips, “I can’t criticize his character, mainly because he doesn’t seem to have one.” To her surprise, their weekend in Normandy turns into a six-year-relationship. Then, Madame Peloux announces that she has found an appropriate 18-year-old bride for her now-reformed 25-year-old boy. Afraid to admit the depth of their feelings for each other, the duo grudgingly goes along with the plan since Belle Époque society demands that a proper gentleman marry a proper lady, and Lea realizes that matrimony to a man half her age isn’t an option. But real love–even the co-dependent kind–can’t be banished quite so easily as a bad habit.

Frears and Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher Hampton, adapting Chéri and The Last of Chéri, previously collaborated with Pfeiffer on Dangerous Liaisons, but their reunion is a comparatively somber affair that comes recommended more for fans of the actress, who gives the role her all, than for fans of the filmmaker, whose direction feels perfunctory, particularly during the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it epilogue.

Chéri was launched in Thailand the last July 7, and it has already got release date for its edition on DVD, it will be this Thursday, 10th of September… perhaps a bit quick, just 2 months since the launch in cinemas!

United Home Entertainment is the distributor of this movie, who use to have general DVD and Special DVD with different packages for Hollywood drama movies. At the moment there isn’t more facts if Cheri will have special version or not.  Here the picture of Cheri DVD, the normal version..

Well, now, such as we all know, since the new launch (also) straight to DVD of Personal Effects the upcoming 12th of May in the US, Entertainment Weekly comes back to report about it in a (even a shamer) article:

Michelle Pfeiffer goes straight to DVD. Again.

Though she never attained the box-office clout to warrant it, Michelle Pfeiffer is one of the few female actresses who answers to Movie Star. Beautiful, elegant, talented, beautiful, Pfeiffer would have been a screen icon in any era, and at 50 she’s still got It.

Movie Stars, however, don’t typically appear in straight-to-DVD films. Personal Effects, though, in which Pfeiffer costars with Kathy Bates and Ashton Kutcher, will be released on video on May 12. This follows I Could Never Be Your Woman, a sweet romance with Paul Rudd that limped straight to video last year.

Is Pfeiffer a victim of the shrinking independent scene, poor career choices, or just a shifting audience that can’t recall how she looks atop a piano? This June, she’ll headline Stephen Frears‘ Parisian romance, Cheri, but what she needs is a winning role in a studio film. She was funny and sexy in 2007’s Hairspray, and I still think she was George Clooney’s most formidable onscreen gal, in 1996’s One Fine Day. While her female contemporaries are proving there’s life after 50, it would be a shame for Pfeiffer to be wasting her time in films cast directly into the $3.99 rack.

So then, other sites on the net also echoes about the news. So the Lost Boy blog titles “Poor Michelle Pfeiffer” and talks about “unfortunate and sexist message to 40+ actresses everywhere: Don’t take half a decade off, they won’t welcome you back.” The Moviezzz Blog titles Pfeiffer as “The New Queen of Direct to DVD?” and talks about the punishment for her comments about Grease 2, “I hated that film with a vengeance and could not believe how bad it was. At the time I was young and didn’t know any better. I hear it’s a cult movie now,” and they propose that “once she embraces GREASE 2 for what it was, the movie gods will forgive her and I’m sure her career will get back on track.” (LOL)

And from Exclaim.ca comes a dvd-review —and which I’m pretty agree in many points.

When a feature film starring Ashton Kutcher, Michelle Pfeiffer and Kathy Bates finds itself relegated directly to DVD bargain bins with absolutely no publicity it seems a safe bet that the crap factor is high. But the question is how high and what type of crap? Well, the big problem with Personal Effects is not that it’s particularly bad – it has its strong points – but more that nothing about it is particularly good, or even very interesting. [...] With disconnected characters struggling for meaning within chaos and feeling isolated and still while waiting for some sort of closure or action, the film could have been moving, but a ham-fisted handling of the material and a peculiar, ineffective performance from Kutcher leave the film flailing from the get-go. Hollander’s direction goes for the on-the-nose blue-grey colour scheme often associated with mourning and relies on stylization and close-ups at times when there is nothing for the audience to reflect on. Simultaneously, when a moment of truth stumbles along, Hollander cuts away and handles it with a coldness that quashes intensity before it can happen. It’s awkward and screams inexperience. On the upside, Bates, as always, has some fantastic scenes. The DVD includes only a brief “making of” that features film clips that run far too long, along with some brief interviews. Kutcher points out that he and his character have much in common, which we already know.

Well, we keep a consolation and a hope… Chéri.

Finally the worst hopes have come true, Personal Effects will be released straight to Blu-ray Disc by the distribution company Screen Media the next May.

According the news on Video Business:

Screen Media’s first Blu-ray Disc slate will use price and personalities to compete with major studio releases in the new format. To break into the business, the indie label will selectively release its highest-profile titles at pricing less than $30. [...]

Titles coming to Blu-ray this year from Screen Media include dramas Personal Effects, starring Ashton Kutcher and Michelle Pfeiffer, and Lymelife featuring Alec Baldwin and Cynthia Nixon. Neither title has exact pricing specified. Personal Effects and Lymelife are slated for May and July/August Blu-ray bows, respectively.

Screen Media normally streets about 22 to 24 features on DVD each year through distributor Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

On the other hand according to one of our pfan-visitors, Personal Effects will be launched shortly in Spain in theaters, and that a little distribution company has bought the rights to release it.

Also Dennis does send us new-bad-news from Germany about the movie, the distributor HMH has changed the cover of the DVD Special Edition… now even more horrible than before! They have used the “teaser poster” that the production company, Voltage Pictures, used during the filming set where the picture of Michelle isn’t at least a still of the movie.

It really seem they wanted ruin the movie… if they had asked me to design a new cover, I would done… even free. I love my work! 8)

But the really extrange is the cover of the Dvd… look on the left, can you believe it?, Michelle Pfeiffer’s name appears in the first place, yes; but her picture has missed of the image…

Can someone explain it?

The truth is that I’m really mad with it. I have to tell that I’m hoping for this movie because I have good expetation with it. Yeah, I like the trailer, I like the story and I liked Michelle Pfeiffer appeared in this movie… yeah!… it is an small movie but I think it is interesting enough as an actress… but after seeing all these issues I’m not too sure if it’s worth it! I  love small movies, I love independent films… but I don’t want a movie which is going to be launched straight on Dvd… really I feel a little disappointment and frustrated with it.
