Plot Summary

» Melanie Parker, an architect and mother of Sammy, and Jack Taylor, a newspaper columnist and father of Maggie, are both divorced. They meet one morning when overwhelmed Jack is left unexpectedly with Maggie and forgets that Melanie was to take her to school. As a result, both children miss their school field trip and are stuck with the parents. The two adults project their negative stereotypes of ex-spouses on each other, but end up needing to rely on each other to watch the children as each must save his job. Humor is added by Sammy's propensity for lodging objects in his nose and Maggie's tendency to wander.

This gentle comedy almost seems like something out of Hollywood's Golden Age, a movie that might have been made by a talented contract director, perhaps featuring Don Ameche and Claudette Colbert. It stars George Clooney as the investigative columnist for a New York newspaper and Michelle Pfeiffer as the architect. Michael Hoffman (Restoration) directs with a good sense of what's funny about harried caretakers and kids who do whatever they want to do. The story stretches out of shape a bit when Clooney's character has to rally to prove some point of corruption at City Hall; nobody involved seems quite up to making that subplot believable, but all that really matters about this very nice movie is the winning love story.

Curiosities

» George Clooney held Mae Whittman in front of his face when his eye was bruised from a recent basketball injury in the scene is when Jack shows up at Melanies' appartment.

» The school that was used for the scene where Jack and Melanie find their children's class had already left is a private college called the New York School of Interior Design or NYSID. The red front doors were added for the filming.

» Michelle Pfeiffer and Melanie Parker share the same initials (MP)

» The film the children watch near the end is The Wizard of Oz, Michelle's favourite film. In the book based on the screenplay, it is Mary Poppins, so there had to be a reason for changing it.

» At one point George Clooney's Jack Taylor, gets called Jack Kelley, the name of Michelle's father-in-law, and who John Henry was named after.

» Near the end when Melanie bumps into the table in her apartment, it was apparently not in the script. Michelle's clumsiness was therefore left in the movie.

» Michael Baddalucco, who plays Jimmy Berluti in the Emmy and Golden Globe winning TV series, The Practice (written and produced by David E Kelley) has a bit part as a police officer in the station. The story goes that although he had a small part, Michelle recognised his dedication and mentioned him to her husband when Badalucco auditioned for a guest appearance in an episode of The Practice. David was impressed enough by him to give him one of the roles in the ensemble cast.

» George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer knew each other before they made One Fine Day. Years ago, George dated Michelle's sister, Dedee.

» Holland Taylor, who plays Rita, Melanie's mother in One Fine Day, went on to play a judge in The Practice, and won a Golden Globe for the role. Her character in the David E. Kelley legal drama had an age-gap romance with Michael Baddaluco's (also in The Practice and One Fine Day) character, Jimmy.
