June 16, 2009‘CHÉRI,” starring Michelle Pfeif fer, Kathy Bates, Rupert Friend, opens June 26. So, what’s this movie about?
“I play a turn-of-the-century courtesan, which is the elegant term for what’s basically considered a modern-day call girl,” said Michelle Pfeiffer.
Visions of glorious gorgeous Michelle Pfeiffer and today’s Spitzer shpritzer Ashley Dupre danced in my head.
“In those days women weren’t allowed to own real estate, so my character’s an unexpected type. Not what you’d think of as a regular prostitute. She was an independent shrewd businesswoman.” More visions of hooker Ashley and her “Girls Gone Wild” big-selling video.
Former beauty contest winner, repeatedly listed among the world’s most beautiful, labeled one of filmdom’s sexiest stars, Michelle Pfeiffer is now a mother of two and in her 50s. So, did she use body makeup because she’s maybe nude in this?
“Let’s just say you see a lot of skin. But each scene depends on the lighting. If low and kind of gold, I didn’t need it. But we did use body makeup to blend out skin tones. The whole thing to looking great in films is your lighting. Forget anything else. It’s the lights . . . direct light, soft light, overhead light, pink light. If they have the right key light on you, it makes no difference what face creams you use because they can make bags under your eyes disappear and all the lines on your cheek go away. This is what can age you 20 years or take 20 years off. Any of us know to make friends with the lighting director because that’s the guy who’s your best friend in making a movie.”
So, Kathy Bates, what role do you play?
“I’m a courtesan, too. But an ex-courtesan. My son is played by Rupert Friend, who’s in his 20s and who, along the way, meets this older rival of mine, Michelle Pfeiffer, and because it’s less expensive for me I pawn him off on her.”
Since some might recall her “About Schmidt” scene in which she went naked in a Jacuzzi with Jack Nicholson, and since “Chéri” is big with sex and hookers and Doing It, is Kathy Bates also clothesless in this one?
“Oh, God no. No hot tub in this one for me. I’m corseted up the whole movie.”
Thrilled to be in New York for the opening, she says: “My best friends live here. But I have to live in California because my whole family’s there. Besides, I live a very quiet lifestyle. I read. Paint. I even have a studio. I write a little on the side. Even took a writing course and, who knows, I may try my hand someday at a novel.
“See, the market has changed so dramatically. It’s action films, FX, reality stuff. Few real dramas. The images we see nowadays and the lifestyles people read about is what’s selling today. Who knows what that’ll mean for me down the road? I wonder how much longer ladies of my age will continue to work. For now I’m OK, but I can’t foresee what’s later on. I don’t know what I’d do. I only know I’d try to stay in the creative field.”
Tonight “Chéri” gets a VIP screening. For those usual social sociables who if Cinema Society’s Andrew Saffir invited them free would show even at Guantanamo, there’s Kathy Bates‘ P.S.: “Toward the end, there is a scene where Rupert and I and his young wife are sitting in this glorious period drawing room. It was shot in an estate in Paris. On the mantel you see an oil painting. A wonderful portrait of me as a young courtesan. I now own it. Director Stephen Frears sent it to me for my birthday.”
