Michelle Pfeiffer talks to ETonline about Chéri.
ETonline has published an video interview with Michelle Pfeiffer where the actress talks about her role in Chéri and how she does stay looking so youthful at 51… In the video also, Rupert Friend talks about working with Michelle. The interview belong to the Press Conference to promote the movie in Beverly Hills the past April.
Michelle Pfeiffer Finds a Younger Lover in ‘Cheri’
Michelle Pfeiffer gives the “cougar” concept a whole new meaning in the 1920s period fantasy ‘Cheri,’ in theaters June 26, and ET has her take on romancing a sexy younger man — two decades younger — onscreen!
“[My onscreen love interests are getting] younger and younger — I never would have predicted,” Michelle tells ET. “Lucky for me [Rupert Friend] is just incredibly smart, and really, really funny and a really fun person to be around. I enjoyed him very much.”
So, how does Michelle stay looking so youthful at 51?
“You look at all these magic bullets for weight loss and this and that, and the truth of the matter is we don’t want to take the time to work out, or we don’t want to take the time to eat healthy and just lead a healthy lifestyle — which ultimately is what you have to do,” she says.
“All of those other things have crazy side effects, and are maybe a temporary fix, but we don’t really want to know about that,” she continues. “I haven’t found any of that stuff to work. Somebody said to me once, ‘If your grandmother used it, you can consider it kind of safe.’ I use that as my barometer.”
An adaptation of the 1920s French novel by Colette, ‘Cheri’ finds Michelle as an older woman grappling with middle age who teaches a wealthy young man (Rupert) in the ways of love. But when he is forced to end the relationship after marrying someone else, he retreats into a fantasy world.
“She’s a courtesan, which I guess would be the equivalent to a modern-day call girl,” explains Michelle. “When you say that, there are certain images that come to mind, and certain qualities and behaviors, and she was so different than the stereotypical kind of prostitute, really.”
Also starring Kathy Bates and Felicity Jones, ‘Cheri’ was directed by Stephen Frears (‘The Queen,’ ‘The Grifters’).

About Chéri
Michelle Pfeiffer: I just, I mean I loved the script, I loved the character and I’m surprised by the way this character was written and portrayed. She’s a courtesan which basically would be the equivalent of a modern day call-girl, um, and I think, you’re a prostitute and I think when you say that there are certain images that come to mind, certain qualities and behaviors and she was so different then the stereotypical kind of prostitute really and and she was a, not this particular character but these women, courtesans were real, they actually existed during this very small period of time and, um, they’re fascinating.
Rupert Friend: I think that obviously the thing that you can’t sort of get away from is the idea between a relationship , not just between a young man and an older woman but a young man who has known this woman for his entire life and she’s been a family friend since he was born, so it’s a way of transitioning from a best friend, mother’s best friend, sort of godmother-type figure to suddenly developing into a lustful relationship and from that into a deep love
About working with Rupert Friend
MP: He was just a joy, um, and I didn’t know , I just didn’t know what to expect, um, because I didn’t, I wasn’t familiar with his work, hadn’t met him and I met him, I don’t know, the day before shooting, something like that, and , um, lucky for me, he was, he is, incredibly smart, and really really funny and really fun, you know, just a really fun person to be around. I enjoyed him very much.
About working with Michelle Pfeiffer
RF: She’s an incredible actress and a, sort of, screen icon, so it really raised the bar, you know, even if it was already incredibly high already being Stephen Frears and Christopher Hampton and a Collete novel, a big part to know that you’re acting opposite somebody of that caliber was incredible exciting.
About staying looking so youthful at 51
MP: We’re so used to the immediacy, because of the Internet I suppose, we just, um, we expect things to happen much quicker and we get very frustrated you know, even if you look at, you know, all these magic bullets for weight loss and this and that. The truth of the matter is that we don’t want to take the time to work-out, or we don’t want to take the time to, you know, eat healthy, or, you know, just sort of lead a healthy life style which ultimately is ultimately is what you have to do, because all these other things have crazy side effects and maybe, you know, they’re sort of temporary fixes, but we don’t wanna, we don’t really wanna know about that.
I mean I haven’t found any of that stuff to work. So I don’t, you know, also you know, that’s … I don ‘t know it just seems that there are some many things out there now and they don’t have any long term studies to them, you don’t know, yea, they’re telling me it’s safe now, but 20 years from now it’s going to give me some crazy thing and, I don’t know, I just think ,somebody said to me once when I was .., they said, if your grandma didn’t use it, or they said, if your grandma used it you can consider it kind of safe. So whenever I, sort of, use it as sort of my barometer in terms of you know, what I eat or what I put on my skin.
