The schizophrenic personal style of Michelle Pfeiffer, between hippy chic and Channel (+ transcription)

New interesting interview with our Michelle Pfeiffer who talks about wearing enormous hats in Cheri, as well as her own fashion mishaps!… from Glamour.
Sweet Cheri
Michelle Pfeiffer describes her personal style as schizophrenic – explaining that “for a while I’ll decide to be hippy chic and then for a while I’ll decide I need to grow up and wear Chanel!”
Admitting that she finds the resurgence of Eighties dressing “horrifying”, the Hollywood beauty tells VogueTV about the style trials of her latest role – as an irresistible seductress in the Stephen Frears-directed Chéri, in which she stars alongside Kathy Bates and Rupert Friend.
“The challenge was to wear those enormous hats without pulling your hair out,” she admits. “And the next challenge was to fit both Kathy and myself onto the screen at the sametime – they really were huge.”
Interview Transcript
Reporter: So Michelle, what attracted you to this role?
Michelle Pfeiffer: I was very surprised by the interpretation of a courtesan of that time, and she’s a woman of integrity, and a woman who’s fiercely independent and very shrewd business woman and incredibly ahead of her time during a period of time when, I mean not only is not your stereotypical view of a courtesan but it was also during a period of time when women didn’t really have any freedom to speak of, so, um , and she was also really, not only she was ahead of her time, she was also ahead of her piers so, um, and of course, the idea of working with Stephen Frears again was really, really exciting
Rep: So you play a beautiful retired courtesan, grappling with the aging process. Do you think women at the turn of the 20th century dealt with aging differently to today , in Hollywood specifically?
MP: No, we probably have just more creams available
Rep: So you’ve acted in films for what, 30 years?
MP: Ahem
Rep: What advice would you give Rupert Friend about coping with celebrity ?
MP: He just doesn’t need any advice, he’s really grounded and really smart, and he already gets it
Rep: The costumes in the film are amazing.
MP: Ahem
Rep: How were they to wear and were there any wardrobe mishaps?
MP: The only challenge was the hats – there were, you know, that was a bit of a challenge, they weight a lot …
Rep: Really…?
MP: … so how do you get them to stay on without sort of pulling your hair out, and then the challenge was always hot to fit Kathy (Bates) and I in the same frame (laughs) we were both wearing hats!
Rep: The characters style are sort of immaculate and uncomplicated. How would you define your style?
MP: Schizophrenic
Rep: Really?
MP: Ahem
Rep: In what way?
MP: Um, you know, I just sort of for a while I’ll decide I’ll be hippy chic and then I’ll decide I need to grow up and I need to wear Channel
Rep: Can you admit of making any sort of fashion mistakes?
MP: when I first started out, some of the things, I look back, you know, and , um, with the shoulder pads and the rolled up sleeves – and that’s coming back!! I saw that in a fashion magazine, I was horrified!

I suppose that’s the reason why Kathy doesn’t wear a hat in the flower tunnel.^^
I would run away from eighties fashion too. I had to survive it once, and that’s more than enough.
i think we all look back and think WHAT WERE WE THINKING
Oh….I thought it’s from VOGUE UK?
I love when she exclaims she’s horrified! That made me laugh out loud… It makes me think of in Witches of Eastwick when the three try to seduce Jack Nicholson; Cher and Susan Sarandon are in these elegant gowns and Michelle is basically wearing jammie-jamz and a porkpie hat….?
Maybe she was just TOO beautiful to put in a DeLaRenta, i dunno.
yeah that outfit in witches of eastwick was…….. DIFFERENT haha
I’m just glad I didn’t have to live through that era, but the shoulder pads and the rolled up sleeves – why do they have to come back??? LOL!
