Reporter: Now, somebody had to play Rupert Friend’s lover…
Michelle Pfeiffer: Oh, I know, somebody had to do it, yeah!

Rep: It’s a tough life.
MP: Yeah, I suffered through it

Rep: Has he being sweet to work with?
MP: Really sweet and really funny and really really smart and obviously very talented.

Rupert Friend plays Cherie, Katy Bate’s son, Madame Pelloux. Set in France, during the time named as “Belle Epoque”, “The Beautiful Era”, Cherie’s life changes when he becomes involved with his mother’s friend, Lea. What starts off as just a fling, turns out to be a six year relationship.

Rupert Friend: Lea is pretty, the most successful courtesan of her time and fabulously beautiful, and intelligent and witty and charming so that certainly keeps him interested. But also she’s got many years of experience and therefore she can teach him things and not kind of pursuit his spoilesness. So, I think it’s something to do with an education, maybe.

And an education he gets. But does it all end happily ever after? Well, what do you think? Cheri is not just a love story, or a period drama, if you can see past of the big hats, there’s some real contemporary issues at the center, as director Stephen Frears points out when explaining why he cast Michelle Pfeiffer.

Stephen Frears: Well, it’s about a beautiful woman. And since you can make the case of it, you know, she’s sort of the most beautiful woman in the work, or maybe she was – but that’s being unkind, you know, it’s about beauty and the loss of beauty and the business of aging.

Yes, getting older is pretty annoying. Michelle Pfeiffer is perfect as Lea and Rupert is equally suited to Cheri so go see this film if you are fans of theirs or if you like Paris or equally if you like Stephen Frears.

“Is sort of the most beautiful…” I think his English was just off, we know he didn’t mean that. Michelle is one of the most beautiful women in the world, inside and out.

I think he may be referring to the ‘contemporary’ ideology of ‘the most beautiful’, meaning a woman in the prime of her twenties who has reached a different prime of life… so that is what he means when he implies the past-tense. I think it is universally agreed that Pfeiffer is probably the best example of a beautiful woman physically, so we don’t need to take offense much about this misinterpreted slip…!

MAYBE SHE WAS! What is that?! I’m sorry but I’m totally dazzled my her beauty, it’s so unique. It’s one in a million and he implies that shes not beautiful anymore, well I’ll give him a load of cash if he can name another middle aged woman who looks better than Michelle… it’s impossible!
