Interview with Michelle Pfeiffer from BBC News (+ transcription)

New interview with Michelle Pfeiffer talking to BBC News in London about Chéri:
Transcription Interview
Rep: Being English, British, I’m very reticent to talk about a lady’s age.
MP: I have no idea what you’re talking aboutRep: You’re not making this easy
MP: I was actually turning 50 while I was actually making the movie so when I was considering making this movie and reading this script I… I had that sort of, number, looming in front of me.It’s obviously a coming of age for Cheri and Lea sets about trying to, you know, usher him into adulthood, and, um, and and, in a way, she’s really doing the same think, you know, it’s both of them, you find them at a time when they are… having a hard time letting go of a chapter they’ve really outgrown, and, um, crossing over that threshold into the next stage and, um, they sort of, um, spend a long time doing it (laughs), so, it’s interesting, you know, turning 50 tuned out not such a big a deal.
Rep: I just wonder, what’s the Michelle Pfeiffer guide to that age thing?
MP: I don’t have a guide…Rep: … But did you worry?
MP: I wish I did…Rep: … did you worry?
MP: Um, I think that I’ve never actually worried about any birthdays 30, 40, I have to say though that 50… it’s not really that I worried, rather I just tried not to think about it, and,um, but, if anything, if I think a few …certainly the people that I’ve talked to, women, um, have turned 50, it actually is liberatingRep: Is it a good time to be an “older” actress?
MP: I think so, I think so. I mean, everyone wishes there were more parts to go around, but I think that, I think that are more and more interesting parts when they do come your wayRep: You started as… I didn’t even realized this… as a beauty contestant, Miss California 1978?
MP: Actually it was Miss Midway City, um, Miss Orange County
Rep: Miss orange County
MP: Yes
Rep: Apologies
MP: I didn’t win Miss California…
Rep: You still got the…
MP: Yes I do
Rep: Do you really?
MP: Actually my dad passed away recently and I was cleaning out his office and he had my tiara …yeah
Rep: Fantastic
MP: …it’s sweet …and my sister wears it all the time nowRep: Can I ask you about downtime as well, ‘cause I know you took 45 years, everyone says “Oh, where did she disappear”, ‘cause you were just leading a life like normal people do and you have kids and you wanted to do that...
MP: yeah, it’s not unusual for me honestly, to go a year or two without working. On about the fourth year I started to get itchy… and, honestly I didn’t honestly really stop to think about how long it had been, and I thought this is going too long now, I need to get back to work (laughs)Rep: Was it the kids, did they sort of, say…
MP: They, they , actually in about year three they were saying “Mom, are you ever gonna go back to work?”(laughs)Rep: They were sick of having you home?
MP: Um, what do you mean, isn’t it nice having me around? What do you mean? And they said, yeah …Rep: Well, thank you very much for your time today
MP: You’re welcomeRep: Thank you
