At 51, Michelle Pfeiffer can still pull the young guys
At the age of 51 and still strikingly beautiful, Michelle Pfeiffer had started to become concerned that her leading men seemed to be getting younger.
She had romanced Ashton Kutcher, 20 years her junior, in the character-based drama Personal Effects last year and decided enough was enough.
“I said if this trend kept going I was going to get into some illegal territory,” she says.
“Ashton is just so beautiful and perfect and I just thought, ‘I’m not doing this again‘.”
Then Stephen Frears, who had directed her in the deliciously decadent Dangerous Liaisons two decades ago, handed her a script called Cheri, an R-rated story set in Belle Epoque Paris and based on the writings of the much-married and somewhat scandalous Colette (Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, 1873-1954).
Pfeiffer would spend much of the movie bedding “an even younger beautiful man“, British actor Rupert Friend, who not only is a mere 27 but also the boyfriend of 24-year-old Keira Knightley.
“Nice work if you can get it,” Pfeiffer quips now, having changed her mind about the direction in which her co-stars’ ages are heading.
“I guess now I have sort of grown accustomed to it. In the beginning it feels a little strange, I have to say, but very soon into shooting you’re just two actors doing your job. It’s a little awkward but it’s really helpful when your leading man is funny, which he is. He’s got a great sense of humour and it’s good to keep it a little silly.”
Pfeiffer’s 53-year-old husband David E Kelley, the multimillionaire creator, writer and producer of a string of hit TV series including Ally McBeal, The Practice and Boston Legal, has only a professional eye for his wife’s on-screen affairs.
“It’s the beauty of being married to somebody who’s also in the industry,” she says. “He handles that pretty well.”
But the couple decided to break the ice with Friend and Knightley by arranging a dinner before the shooting of Cheri started.
“It wasn’t just because of that,” Pfeiffer says of the intimate scenes she knew she would share with Friend. “We just wanted to go to dinner together. And, I mean, Keira was around (during shooting). She’s lovely. I hope I work with her one day.”
Pfeiffer, who has an adopted daughter Claudia, 15, and a 14-year-old son, John, with Kelley, has moved smoothly into her 50s – regarded by many as the new 40s.
She and her family moved away from Hollywood to San Francisco several years ago. She works less now than she did during the days when she broke into the movie industry in Grease 2 (1982) and starred opposite the likes of Al Pacino (in Scarface, 1983, and Frankie & Johnny, 1991), Jack Nicholson (The Witches of Eastwick, 1987, and Wolf, 1994), Jeff and Beau Bridges (The Fabulous Baker Boys, 1989), Robert Redford (Up Close and Personal, 1996) and Harrison Ford (What Lies Beneath, 2000).
When not being a wife and mum or Hollywood star, Pfeiffer enjoys a range of pastimes, including oil painting – “my big passion” – which she has studied off and on over the past 15 years.
Other than that, she is busiest with the “one big improvisation” in life of raising her children.
“I would say the good part about turning 50 – because that’s sort of the big number that everybody dreads – is it’s really not such a big deal,” Pfeiffer says. “You spend so much time dreading it and there’s just so much talk about it, and then it comes and goes and it’s all over and it’s actually been something for me that’s incredibly liberating. It is really letting go of the need to stay young forever, the need to be perfect, the need for all those things. I think I’ve become more forgiving of all those things.”
If she is not still close enough to perfect, Pfeiffer disguises it well as she sits in a room at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.
She is wearing a floral top by Sienna Miller, designer jeans (J Brand) and Jimmy Choo shoes, but has to be reminded of the names by a publicist. “I show up, they throw things on me and here I am,” she says, laughing.
“If it fits, it’s good. Normally you’d find me in sweats or pyjamas. I like loose-fitting clothes. I don’t like anything really tight. I try sometimes to put on a pair of those skinny jeans. I mean, they look so good on people and every now and then I convince myself I should wear skinny jeans, too, but they last about seven minutes on me. I just can’t take them.”
Pfeiffer has been married to Kelley for more than 15 years. He is her second husband, following her nine-year marriage to actor and director Peter Horton.
“The big secret about men,” she says, “is you have to pick the right one. If you don’t pick the right one there’s not much you can do. It’s just a matter of time, so I learned.”
She and Kelley met on a blind date: “So really I didn’t pick, did I? That’s the thing. You need your friends to pick for you.”
She already was in the process of secretly adopting Claudia, and says it was “about three weeks” before she was convinced Kelley would be part of the extended family she was planning.
“I thought, ‘Oh, shit, I don’t think he’s going away‘,” she says. “Nobody knew I was adopting a child and I thought, ‘He’s going to be here when she comes so I need to tell him’. I was nervous, of course, but I thought, ‘Well, this will separate the boys from the men really quickly, won’t it?’. It was just the way he handled it. He actually got a little envious, you know? He really loved the idea.”
Cheri opens in cinemas in Australia on July 23.
