Long Synopsis | About the Production | Casting the Film | Recreating the Period
Cheri, at the first, was a project originally started by Jessica Lange. The actress had been for years trying to get the book Chèri by Colette made into a film, and a few years back she managed through Bill Kenwright to get Christopher Hampton to write the screenplay.
Up to May of 2007 they were ready to start production after she finished her run of the play The Glass Menagerie in the West End, but when the director Stephen Frears came on board she was told that at 58 years of age she is too old to play the 50 years old heroine of the book, so they asked her to leave.
In the middle January in 2008, Daily Mail leaked that Stephen Frears was interested on Michelle Pfeiffer to head the cast and that he was wooing her.
Let’s remember that Frears directing, Pfeiffer acting and Hampton on the script got a great success with Dangerous Liaisons. Cheri would be the reunion of the trio after twenty years.
Finally the following month Variety announced the news so waited for pfans, Michelle Pfeiffer was in the final negotiations to star in the movie. In April, the movie began the filming in Biarritz, South of France.
